Cooking Gas Price Rises By 12% In One Year, Says NBS

cooking gas priceAccording to a recent report from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly referred to as cooking gas, rose by 12 percent over the span of one year, reaching N4,589.

The report titled ‘Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch (January 2024)’ indicates that the price of a 5kg cooking gas, which stood at N4,589 in January 2023, experienced a 3.5 percent month-on-month increase in average retail refill cost for a 5kg cylinder, rising from N4,963 in December 2023 to N5,139 in January 2024.

In a breakdown by state, Nassarawa registered the highest average refill price for a 5kg gas cylinder at N5,790, trailed by Jigawa at N5,682, and Gombe at N5,660. Conversely, Kaduna reported the lowest price at N4,150, followed by Ogun and Osun at N4,751 and N4,763 respectively.

Furthermore, the analysis by region revealed that the North-East had the highest average retail refill price for a 5kg cylinder at N5,296, followed by the North-Central at N5,240, while the South-West recorded the lowest at N4,805.

Additionally, the average retail cost for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder saw a 1.96 percent month-on-month increase, climbing from N11,510 in December 2023 to N11,736 in January 2024. Comparatively, on a year-on-year basis, this marked a 14.2 percent rise from N10,277 in January 2023.

In terms of state analysis, Cross River reported the highest average retail refill price for a 12.5kg cylinder at N13,040, followed by Jigawa at N12,875, and Zamfara at N12,725. Conversely, Kaduna had the lowest average price at N9,699, trailed by Kwara and Niger at N10,000 and N10,400 respectively.

Furthermore, examination by region revealed that the South-South had the highest average retail refill price for a 12.5kg cylinder at N12,602, followed by the North-West at N12,225, while the South-West recorded the lowest at N11,189.
